Seattle City Council mulls compromise that would undo proposed SPD cuts

The council will need to muster seven of nine votes to override the mayor's veto, which would codify the council’s proposals into law.

But on Monday, council President Lorena Gonzalez proposed a compromise amendment should the panel not reach the needed votes to override Durkan's veto.

“This bill is an attempt to move us forward,” Gonzalez said during a Monday council meeting. “It does memorialize certain council priorities that continue to be priorities, including creating a framework and path towards the question around the size of the sworn personnel at the SPD, for example creating a pathway towards actively looking to out-of-order layoffs.”

In the compromise floated by Gonzalez, most of the council’s suggested SPD cuts would be rolled back.
