Washington unemployment drops to 7.8% in September, with Seattle area even lower

Washington state’s unemployment rate dropped again in September to 7.8%, according to the Employment Security Department’s monthly employment report.

State unemployment is still about even with the nationwide rate, while the Seattle/Bellevue/Everett metro area has inched even lower, to 7%. The Seattle rate is more than double what it was during September 2019, and the Washington rate is about 90% higher than a year ago.

ESD economist Paul Turek said in a statement that payroll growth slowed in September. Turek said there was less government hiring in local education than is typical, likely a result of the shift to remote learning.

The government sector lost the most jobs last month at 9,700 and is down 24,800 jobs year over year. The manufacturing industry, down 27,100 jobs year over year, also lost about 1,900 jobs in September.

And of course it’s more important to stack the SC than pass any stimulus. The average person doesn’t really pay attention to the SC (they should) but when the unemployment insurance runs out, no more stimulus funds, and the temporary hold on people being evicted ends a lot of people will be hurting. And that’s not even taking into account the people who were granted temporary forbearance on their mortgage payments. I hope everyone remembers this come Election Day.
