OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Tim Eyman's I-976 initiative that would have reduced car tab fees to $30 has been ruled unconstitutional by the State Supreme Court.
The nine judges ruled unanimously that the initiative contained more than one subject while 8 of the 9 judges also ruled the initiative's subject was "not accurately expressed in its title."
The judges' ruling Thursday is a victory for a coalition of cities, King County and Garfield County's transit agency, which had sued saying it would eviscerate funds they need to pay for transit and road maintenance.
"Justice for Seattle voters prevailed in today's Supreme Court ruling on I-976," Tweeted Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan. "Even before the pandemic and economic crisis, Seattles transportation budget was unnecessarily decimated by I-976 last year and our residents and businesses have felt the real impacts of cuts."
