Inslee issues new restrictions on living areas at colleges, universities after coronavirus outbreaks
Gov. Jay Inslee on Tuesday announced new restrictions on congregate living settings and social gatherings at colleges and universities across Washington after coronavirus outbreaks have been reported at several institutions over the past few months.
Under the new requirements, masks will be required at all times in living areas on campus except when outside or in sleeping areas. Congregate sleeping porches will no longer be allowed and no more than two people are allowed to share the same sleeping area. Only five people from outside a household will be allowed to gather at a time and common areas in homes can have no more than five people at any given time.
"We still believe that education can go forward safely, but that is only if we have some additional safety measures to protect not only students but the larger community and their families from this pandemic," Inslee said during a news conference Tuesday. "We do have a fair expectation that students will step up to the plate and take some responsibility for this."
Under the new order, colleges and universities will also be required to provide isolation and quarantine facilities for students living in shared housing and dorms who need a safe place to isolate.
