Sex education referendum looks to be approved after early Washington state returns
Early election returns show Washington voters could approve a referendum on a Senate bill that requires schools to provide comprehensive sexual health education in public schools.
The initial returns show about 60% of Washington voters approve the referendum, which would uphold the bill passed earlier this year on sex education public schools. Another 40% of voters rejected the referendum.
The bill to provide comprehensive sexual education, including instruction on human development and reproduction, passed earlier this year along party lines and drew opposition from Republicans.
"Republicans have never seen a compelling reason to mandate a sex education curriculum at the state level, and each of us believes those decisions should continue to be made at the local level, where parents can be heard directly," the Senate Republican Caucus said in a statement after the vote in March.

It will be made at the local level. The law simply requires each school district come up with a curriculum.
