Ballard is now home to world's first 'living building' grocery store
You might not know it by looking at them, but there's something notable about the check stands and steam cookers at the 1-year-old PCC Community Markets in Ballard.
The cookers use 90% less water than standard models, and the belts were made with an alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a substance deemed harmful to human and environmental health.
These are among the reasons the market is now the world's first Living Building Challenge (LBC) "petal"-certified grocery store. The community-owned food cooperative and the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) on Tuesday announced the certification. LBC petal certification, a program of Seattle-based ILFI, is widely considered the world's most rigorous green building standard.
PCC declined to say how much extra building out the Ballard store to be LBC petal-certified cost.
