Seattle cruise season hit with major blow after Canada extends cruise ship ban

The Seattle cruise season was hit with a major blow Wednesday after Canada’s minister of transport announced a continued ban that prohibits any pleasure craft and cruise vessels from entering any Canadian Arctic waters until February 2022.

The announcement cancels the Alaska cruise season. Some industry experts gave out warnings, as many of the sailings rely on Canadian ports as a stop.

The decision was made to make sure Canadians and transportation workers are kept safe during the pandemic.

“As Canadians continue to do their part to reduce the spread of COVID-19, our government continues to work hard to ensure Canada’s transportation system remains safe. Temporary prohibitions to cruise vessels and pleasure craft are essential to continue to protect the most vulnerable among our communities and avoid overwhelming our health care systems. This is the right and responsible thing to do,” said the Honourable Omar Alghabra, the minister of transport.
