Southern Resident killer whales welcome new calf L125

The Southern Resident killer whales welcomed a new calf Wednesday morning.

The Orca Networks says the J, K, and L pods gathered in the Haro Strait Wednesday. One of the orcas, 30-year-old L86 Surprise!, had a new calf swimming alongside her named L125.

The Center for Whale Research says photos show L125 to be in good health. They estimate the calf to be about a month old.

Surprise! got her name because she surprised researchers when she was born 14 years after her older sister Nugget.
