Cut off from the rest of America, a small town endures lockdown - CBS Sunday Morning

Point Roberts, Wash., on a peninsula jutting out from Canada beneath the 49th parallel, is a tiny piece of America separate from the U.S. mainland. Its isolation helped protect the community from the spread of COVID-19, but restrictions at the border have effectively trapped residents there – and kept visitors out. Correspondent Lee Cowan journeys to the isolated town suffering from the economic ripple effects of the pandemic.

we now have agreements with Canada to allow residents to make the trip to Blaine for necessary things - doctor's appointments, etc. Now that tRump is out of office and not hurling insults their way things seem to be going a little smoother.

The state has been providing a temporary foot ferry service a few days a week, when the water isn't too rough.

I haven't heard anything about how they're handling the school - the only school there only goes through 4th grade, and all older students took a bus through the two border crossings, each way, every day. Don't know if everything is still set up for distance learning.

Point Roberts is in a strange situation. In the mid-90's they discovered an animal with rabies there. The Americans couldn't bring their animals through the two border crossings to get them vaccinated in the mainland, and the US-approved vaccine was not approved for import into Canada. The Coast Guard set up some 'training missions' to get the vaccine and a veterinarian to the Point, and all the pets got their shots. A lot of Canadians own vacation homes there - like they showed in the video, they can't go across to tend their property.
