SDOT looking for contractor for West Seattle Bridge repairs
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will begin accepting contractor bids to make improvements to the West Seattle Bridge, the city announced Wednesday.
SDOT completed the emergency stabilization work on the bridge in December and has reached the design portion of the repair process, almost a year after Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan approved plans to close the bridge due to spreading cracks. According to the city, most construction contractors are hired after the design process, but bringing the contractor on early will keep the process more predictable.
The bridge closure has had so many impactson the residents and businesses of West Seattle, Georgetown and South Park. Were keeping pace with our aggressive schedule and taking another major step toward reopening the West Seattle High-Bridge, Durkan said in a statement. SDOT and our workers continue to make progress in the pandemic to successfully achieve a very significant milestone on schedule.
According to the city, total bridge rehabilitation costs are about $72 million. After the initial round of bids, SDOT will interview a short list of firms later this spring. The winning firm will begin making repairs this year. When Durkan opted in November to repair rather than replace the bridge, she said the city aimed to reopen the bridge to traffic in mid-2022.
