Opinion: Olympia should finally adopt clean fuel standard

In Washington state, the Senate is debating legislation to create a clean fuel standard. Under the proposed law, oil companies would simply have to blend low carbon fuel made from renewable or waste resources with the fuel they already sell. These standards are already in place in California, Oregon and British Columbia.

By asking fuel makers to reduce their emissions that cause pollution, this bill would help make our communities healthier places to live and pump billions of dollars into our state’s economy. That’s why some of our state’s largest employers like Amazon are standing behind a clean fuel standard.

First, using more clean fuel will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution and make our communities healthier places to live. California displaced 17 billion GGE (gallon gas equivalents) of petroleum since 2011 while eliminating 69 million metric tons of CO2 from transport emissions and reducing the carbon intensity of transportation fuels by 36%.

Second, California’s clean fuel standard reduced the overall cost of fuel, helping both consumers and industries reliant on transportation. The average cost of a gallon of gas fell by nearly 40 cents while consumers spent 16.4% less on fuels in their annual expenditures between 2015 and 2019. Overall, California’s transportation economy grew 34% more than Washington’s since 2011. It also grew more rapidly than all neighboring states and the national average.
