Pierce County Council plans outside probe of Sheriff Troyer's run in with Black man

The Pierce County Council on Tuesday indicated that it plans to launch an outside probe into events two months ago surrounding Sheriff Ed Troyer, who claimed that a Black male newspaper carrier was threatening him, prompting a huge response by local law enforcement officers to his neighborhood.

In a written statement, Pierce County Council Chair Derek Young said he has directed council staff to begin looking for an outside investigator who can conduct an independent review of what happened on Jan. 27. Young issued the order following a council work session that was held Tuesday.

"As this process moves forward, Council is committed to keeping the public informed and will provide regular updates," the council's statement said, adding that a timeline for the probe will be set by how soon an investigator can be hired and what the scope of the review will be.

Troyer issued his own statement, praising the council's decision.
