Washington schools can adopt 3-foot distancing rule, Inslee announces
Washington schools will be able to adopt a new rule requiring students in classrooms to be only 3 feet apart instead of 6 feet, Gov. Jay Inslee announced Thursday.
Schools can adopt this requirement immediately, Inslee said.
"We're very pleased that students and educators and staff are continuing to return to the classroom now across the state of Washington, using safety protocols that we know that work," Inslee said during a news conference Thursday. "Today, I'm glad to be able to say Washington is embracing new guidelines that are safe that will allow even more students back into schools on a more normal setting."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this month announced it was modifying its recommendations for physical distancing between students in grades K-12. Instead of 6 feet of distance which was initially advised, the CDC now said students could be only 3 feet apart, as long as masking and other protocols are in place. Adults would still be expected to follow the 6-foot rule at all times, and kids would be expected to follow it when exercising or singing.
