Seattle Police Department plans to remove concrete barriers around East Precinct

The concrete barriers surrounding the Seattle Police Department's (SPD) East Precinct on Capitol Hill are coming down after nearly eight months in place.

"Broken windows are being replaced and will be covered temporarily with plywood," SPD wrote in a statement Friday. "The concrete barrier will also be removed and replaced temporarily with a fence."

While the precinct remains closed, the department said it was taking these steps following outreach to local businesses and the community in an effort to "reduce obstacles between officers and the people we serve."

The department has not offered a timeline for when the temporary barriers will be removed, saying it depends on whether the precinct will become a target for vandalism.
