Pierce Council wants to hire ex-federal attorney to probe sheriff's run-in with Black man

The Pierce County Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to spend up to $50,000 to extend an offer to hire a Seattle law firm to conduct an independent probe into the actions of Sheriff Ed Troyer, who claimed that a Black male newspaper carrier was threatening him in January, prompting a massive response by local law enforcement officers to his neighborhood.

According to a written statement, the council vote authorizes its staff to prepare a contract with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, the same firm where Brian Moran, former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, is a partner.

The council statement said it plans to hire Moran , who has not publicly disclosed if he will take the job, to conduct the investigation.

Sedrick Altheimer had told a newspaper last week that he was delivering papers in the early morning hours of Jan. 27 when Troyer began following him.
