Inslee signs bill restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated Washingtonians

OYLMPIA, Wash. – On Wednesday, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill to automatically restore the voting rights of people who have been released from prison.

The measure was sponsored by Rep. Tarra Simmons, a Bremerton Democrat who herself was incarcerated before going to law school and being elected to the Legislature last fall.

“Regaining the right to vote, after having lost so many things, meant more to me than most people could imagine,” Simmons said.

She and other supporters said the measure would help encourage former prisoners to reintegrate into society and that it was a matter of racial justice, as those on parole in Washington are disproportionately people of color.
