Deputy Mayor Casey Sixkiller launches bid for Seattle mayor
Seattle Deputy Mayor Casey Sixkiller is taking aim at his boss's job by announcing his own campaign for mayor on Tuesday.
Sixkiller currently serves under Mayor Jenny Durkan, who will not be seeking reelection, and has worked on a host of policies for her administration including its approach to homlessness.
"As a single dad raising three young kids in Seattle, I want them to see that real progress is possible. I want my kids to grow up in a city that turns the values of inclusion, fairness and equity into action," Sixkiller said in a statement Tuesday. "Our city needs bold action, leadership experience, and a mayor who wakes up every day focused on rebuilding a more equitable, inclusive, and thriving city."
Prior to working in the mayor's office, he served as chief operating officer for King County under Dow Constantine and was also a legislative assistant to former Rep. Jim McDermott. His surname might ring bells for some long-time residents: he is the son of University of Washington star quarterback Sonny Sixkiller.
