Wenatchee fire, 'crewing challenges' prompt cuts to summer state ferry service
Washington State Ferries is citing a fire on the ferry Wenatchee last month and crewing challenges as the reasons behind a series of service reductions as the summer season arrives.
The agency has said repairs to the Wenatchee following a fire in an engine room on the vessel on April 22 will keep it out of service for several months. Washington State Ferries spokesman Ian Sterling said an investigation into the fire is ongoing, noting that work must be completed before repairs can begin.
With the agency down a vessel alongside continuing pandemic-related vessel crewing challenges for quarantines and vaccinations, changes on four routes are going into effect.
Bremerton-Seattle: The slower and smaller 64-vehicle Salish is on the route beginning Friday. Along with that vessel comes a schedule adjustment that eliminates an early afternoon round trip until at least June 27.
