Tech job postings remained steady in Seattle during pandemic; other sectors lag in recovery

Fears of a so-called "urban exodus" from major metropolitan tech hubs like Seattle and San Francisco might have been blown out of proportion at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new report from employment website Indeed found that tech job postings in booming markets like Seattle remained steady during the pandemic, and even saw an increase in concentration despite the rise in remote work.

However, there's a catch: overall job postings declined, showing the ripple effect more workers telecommuting had on other industries, especially food service and childcare.

"Tech hubs had steeper declines and slower recoveries in job postings on Indeed during the pandemic than other places. But that’s not because tech jobs dispersed," wrote Indeed Chief Economist Jed Kolko in the report. "Rather, tech hubs lost other jobs — especially in local service businesses — because larger shares of their residents worked from home."
