Seattle to close 3 miles of streets to cars on Lake Washington Boulevard on weekends

Good news for Seattle-area walkers, bikers, and roller bladers: Seattle Parks announced Wednesday it will close three miles of Lake Washington Boulevard to cars every weekend this summer through Labor Day.

The closure will begin this Sunday, July 4, allowing pedestrians more space to recreate around scenic Lake Washington just in time for the holiday. Barricades closing the street to cars will be put in place Friday afternoons and left up until the following Monday morning. Parking lots will still be accessible from the nearest cross street.

The pedestrian-only "Stay Healthy Streets" program began last spring by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic to increase access to outdoor spaces. In total, 26 miles of Seattle streets were converted to Stay Healthy blocks to allow for more social distancing.

"What I’ve witnessed on Lake Washington Boulevard is that when such spaces are opened to people of all ages and abilities, they truly transform into a spaces for people," said Councilmember Tammy Morales in a news release. "Children, families, and elders fill these spaces as they go for strolls, picnic on the grass, or go swimming in the lake. These spaces are truly valued and they are something that all communities in Seattle should be able to access."
