The Seattle metro area is the fastest-growing tech market in the US

The Seattle metro area is the fastest-growing tech market in the nation, according to a new analysis by the CBRE real estate firm.

The analysis shows that Seattle added more than 48,000 tech jobs from 2016 to 2020, an increase of 35.4%. That brings the total number of tech employees in the region to 184,660, making it seventh largest tech market in the U.S. The San Francisco Bay Area holds the top spot, with 373,430 tech employees.

For comparison, the second-fastest growing tech market in the nation between those years was Salt Lake City. It added 12,680 tech jobs, growing at a rate of 33.9%. But it’s total number of tech employees — 50,070 — is significantly lower than Seattle’s

Globally, the only big-city tech markets that grew faster than Seattle’s were in Toronto, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Toronto added 81,100 tech jobs between 2016 and 2020, growing at a rate of 42.8%. Vancouver added 24,200 tech jobs, growing at a rate of 36.1%.

Every day there is a story of some long-time affordable apartment or coop being knocked down (and the people who live there with them), in favor of ugly,. expensive, tiny apartments. The housing market is out of control, the city is a construction zone, city council caters to the tech companies and developers, and there is no end in sight.

It's terrifying.
