Victoria Clipper, Black Ball Ferry optimistic on US-Canada border reopening

The news from the Canadian government this week that non-essential travel between its border with the U.S. could resume in August for fully vaccinated Americans has some ferry travel businesses feeling cautiously optimistic at best.

"We're certainly happy to hear that turn; there's optimism in terms of opening the border," said Clipper CEO David Gudgel.

The Clipper is a high-speed ferry service that takes travelers from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia. In normal times, the service can transport about 260,000 people a year between Victoria and Seattle, according to Gudgel.

But all that came to a standstill when the pandemic hit last year.

It is owned by three employees who bought it from a university in Oregon after it was willed to them by the original owners. They have had a rough time with all of this as the Clipper has as well. It is a gorgeous trip Port Angeles to Victoria and back. Sometimes there are even whale sightings. These are good people so I hope they can hang on.
