Citywide zoning proposal in Tacoma sparks intense debate
The Tacoma City Council waded into the debate last week over proposed policy changes that would allow for large swaths of neighborhoods currently zoned as single-family to be transformed into multifamily areas.
A chief concern among homeowners is that the zoning change could affect home values, as well as erode street parking, impact the water supply and create other infrastructure problems.
Recommendations for the program dubbed Home In Tacoma were developed by the citys planning commission to address housing needs. The proposal would alter zoning to support multifamily developments in most parts of the city. Much of the city would be made into low-scale residential areas that would support housing such as duplexes, triplexes, cottages, and some fourplexes and small multifamily buildings.
Exactly how much of an impact on housing the upzoning would have is based a number of factors, including market demand. Based on the Tacoma Housing Action Plan, upzoning could bump up the number of housing units by anywhere from 20,000 to 45,000.
