Local leaders announce new partnership to replace Seattle's Memorial Stadium, build new school

A landmark in the heart of Seattle could soon be getting a facelift and possibly a new downtown school to serve students nearby.

City leaders announced a new partnership with Seattle Public Schools to replace the 74-year-old Memorial Stadium at the Seattle Center. The new partnership builds off of an agreement forged in 2017 under then Mayor Tim Burgess to redevelop the stadium and other school facilities on Seattle Center grounds.

The district said it would propose a $66.5 million levy next spring to fund a replacement to meet the needs of student athletics and recreation while also serving as an entertainment venue at Seattle Center. The levy would need to be approved by voters.

"We have seen the transformative power of Climate Pledge Arena, and now, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity make progress on Memorial Stadium – one that will provide incredible opportunities for our youth and the community," Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a news release Monday. "Students from across the district should not have to play in facilities that are in disrepair. We owe it to the youth of our City for generations to come to build a first-class facility in the heart of our transforming Seattle Center."

Didn't help that they converted Queen Anne High School into condos a while back.
