Tech giants overtook Boeing during pandemic as state's largest employers
Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) have become Washington's two largest employers since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Business Journal research.
The two tech giants overtook the Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA), which held the top spot for decades. Amazon sprinted to the top of the list by adding 20,000 employees to its payrolls in Washington from 2019 to 2021. Microsoft took second place by gaining over 2,000 employees since 2019 as Boeing lost around 15,000 due to layoffs.
Headcounts for Amazon, Microsoft and Boeing stand at 80,000, 57,666 and 56,908, respectively.
The companies are easily the state's largest private employers, ahead of Providence health care system, which has 13,000 fewer employees than Boeing, and Walmart which has over 24,000 fewer employees.
