Seattle's 72-hour parking rule begins next week after increase in abandoned vehicles

Beginning next week, Seattle’s 72-hour parking rule will once again go back into effect after being suspended the last 19 months amid the pandemic.

The Seattle Department of Transportation cites an increased number of reports of abandoned vehicles around the city’s streets. Starting Oct. 15, car owners will have to move their vehicles every three days to a different block or run the risk of receiving a citation.

As of right now, SDOT’s primary focus will be on those vehicles that have been left behind with no one coming back. For some, there’s concern over what this means for people who live in their cars.

“I know quite a few people you wouldn’t know they were living in their cars but that’s what they’re doing because they can’t afford housing,” said Thomas Street at the Ballard Commons Friday night. Thomas himself falls into that category.
