Opinion: Seattle is still progressive -- but voters demand results

There are a lot of “takes” on what happened in this year’s local election, and it’s easy to want to place election results into a framework that tries to force people into ideological camps.

But the reality in Seattle is more nuanced and complicated than that. Voters want to see their progressive values reflected in effective policies coming out of City Hall, they are frustrated and want to see results on homelessness and safety, and they voted for the candidates they thought could best accomplish that.

The election of an individual is a very important barometer of voter choice, but what was true on Nov. 2 is still true today. The people who live and work here want action, and they want it rooted in their values, especially on the key issues that will create an inclusive, equitable future for everyone while attracting new businesses and families and preserving what makes Seattle ... Seattle.

Those who tell you that there is conflict in wanting to urgently address challenging issues and holding progressive values are wrong.

People in Seattle expect their public institutions to solve big problems, help those in need and make life better for everyone. Most importantly, Seattle residents know change doesn’t happen overnight, but they will stick with it if we can build confidence and show progress. But “small ball” policies aren’t going to be enough. We need to think big and commit to taking on many facets of the issues.
