Jury awards nearly $7M to woman injured in Amtrak derailment
DUPONT, Wash. (KOMO) - A survivor of the Amtrak derailment in DuPont four years ago just a got a huge damage award from a federal jury. But Kylie Steele says the victory is more than just about the money.
It was supposed to be a celebratory inaugural run. Instead, the train was going nearly 80 miles an hour when it was supposed to be going 30 to make that curve. The train derailed over I-5 killing three and injuring 60.
“I was heading home for the holidays to be with my family,” said Kylie Steele. Steele of Oregon was one of those passengers. “I hit my head on the seatback in front of me at about 80 miles an hour. I remember it very clearly and distinctly and have had recurring nightmares and PTSD surrounding the actual event.”
Kylie says she suffered traumatic brain injury with the effects that plague her to this day. “I’m just a sliver of that person today. It’s made a dramatic impact on my life. My battery life has diminished so it’s difficult for me to engage in any kind of activity, but especially social activities with friends or out and about just being in the world. I require a lot of accommodations because of light and sound sensitivity.”
