MacKenzie Scott gives $5.9M to Washington state education nonprofit

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has given $5.85 million to Communities In Schools of Washington and its affiliates in Benton-Franklin, Kitsap and Renton-Tukwila — the largest gift ever for the statewide organization.

The donation is part of Scott's $133.5million gift to the national Communities In Schools network.

CIS state director Erin McCallum says the funds will go toward growing the work the organization does to support students in need with wraparound services and resources, and in working towards educational and racial equity.

When she first received notification by email, McCallum thought it was possibly a scam. ”When I realized this was real, I was speechless,” she said. “I could not speak. And when I finally composed myself 20 seconds later, I told them, ‘You can’t see my facial expression — I have tears running down my face because you have no idea how much these dollars are going to help students across Washington.”
