Snoqualmie Indian Tribe purchases thousands of acres of ancestral forestlands

SNOQUALMIE INDIAN RESERVATION, Wash. – Earlier this week, the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe announced that it had acquired roughly 12,000 acres of its ancestral forestlands in the Tolt River Watershed.

For over a century the land, which has significant cultural, historic, and environmental value to the Tribe, was used for industrial timber.

“Because of this purchase, roughly 12,000 acres of the ancestral lands of the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe are being returned to the People who have loved, cared for, cultivated, and protected them since the beginning of time, and who dearly felt their loss for over a century,” said Snoqualmie Tribal Chairman Robert de los Angeles. “Going forward, our Tribe will sustainably manage these lands to produce revenue for our Tribe while we steward the functioning ecosystems and thriving wildlife populations that have shared these lands with our People since time immemorial.”

The Tribe says it intends to continue to sustainably harvest timber on the property as part of a larger plan to manage the ecosystem and support the native plant and wildlife populations. They are naming the land the Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Forest.

Were they able to 'buy it back' using the same beads and trinkets that were used to take it from them in the first place?

One quarter at a time. The tribe owns a Casino in the Snoqualmie area. Plus, the iconic hotel next to Snoqualmie Falls that was the "Great Northern" in Twin Peaks. I was just there this past October. It's lovely.

That's actually a plotline in the Yellowstone series, which is really interesting. I wondered if such a thing is possible. The state would no longer receive property taxes on it.
