15K laborers will soon be idled if concrete strike continues, contractors estimate
Real estate developers and builders on Tuesday called on 300-plus striking Teamsters and concrete companies to return to the bargaining table to resolve the monthslong dispute that has shut down dozens of projects and idled thousands of construction workers, who aren't on strike but whose labor depends on concrete deliveries.
The group of around 30 contractors, developers and subcontractors is calling for a return to work as the two sides negotiate a contract renewal.
"It's getting pretty bad," Turner Construction General Manager Bill Ketcham said. Turner late last month had to shut down a third project and send non-striking members of the trades home. "Everyone is extremely frustrated and very anxious and wanting to get back to work."
General contractors estimate 2,000 of their workers have been idled. They said with affected subcontractors are taken into account there are probably about 7,500 people not working. As more projects are forced to shut down, there could be up to 15,000 people not working by month's end, they said.
