Crime-weary business leaders offer recommendations to Seattle council committee
In the two months Luminati Labs has operated in Seattle's University District, the facial studio has been robbed of all its products and equipment, said owner Naomi Lewis, who added what's occurring in the neighborhood is a crisis.
She fears for the safety of customers and employees, so keeps a panic button, mace, a taser and a guard dog in the business. "No one should operate this way," said Lewis, one of over two dozen people who shared their stories with the City Council's economic development committee Wednesday.
"We are in desperate need of police or safety officers walking the beat every single day," Lewis said.
Regular foot patrols was one of the recommendations presented to the committee, which heard a litany of hair-raising stories about the street scene in the city, where violent crime increased 20% last year to the highest level in nearly 25 years.
