Marysville schools pause parental consent plan for LGBTQ, other clubs

MARYSVILLE — Citing legal concerns about a proposal that would have required parents to sign off on students joining after-school clubs, the Marysville School Board tabled a vote on the policy Monday.

“The reality here is that we are in a legal bind,” Board President Paul Galovin said. “If we go forward with this policy, we will spend at least $100,000 in legal fees, and if we lose any of those (legal battles), we will spend hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars going through that process. … In the coming weeks, we are going to have to decide how to go forward. I think we need to see this on the agenda again.”

The board agreed to schedule a June 21 workshop on the matter. Board members Connor Krebbs and Keira Atchley both voiced support of a parental consent rule, in some form.

“We have tabled the discussion from last week to now work with the district and have a chance to come up with something,” Atchley said. “For me, I stand with parental consent.”

It makes sense. Parental permission is required for many things. jimfields33 Jun 2022 #1

Parents typically pay for their kids to play sports be in the band and many activities and functions. Plus they need to know about transportation for these activities so they can plan on picking up and dropping off. I’d think this is rather standard for most schools.

Joining a club should be a young person's choice. Parents need to give their kids opportunities to forge their own paths when they are younger so that they will have more information for decision making as young adults. Helecoptering never works.

Most of these clubs are either during school or after school and likely don't have a financial component.

I suspect that this is in response to Gay-Straight Alliance and other groups that some parents are threatened by.

Maybe I'm misreading this push by the school.

It’s pretty clear why they are wanting to change the rules and why they know they will get dragged into court where they will lose.
