Seattle Mayor Harrell vetoes bill that would have required landlords to share rental info
SEATTLE - On Friday, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell vetoed a council bill that would have collected data about rental rates in Seattle to be used for making decisions related to housing in the city.
Harrell vetoed Council Bill 120325 which passed on a five to four vote last month. The legislation would have required landlords to report rental housing information like prices and square footage to a research university for analysis. Landlords are already required to report a list of their rental units under Seattle's Rental Housing Registration and Inspection Ordinance.
Councilmembers Alex Pedersen and Tammy Morales, who sponsored the bill, say the information collected would have been vital to understanding Seattle's housing inventory including how much of the housing is non-subsidized affordable housing. They say the information collected would also be important for making decisions regarding housing such as zoning and land use.
“I am deeply disappointed our solution to collect housing data helpful for preventing displacement of economically vulnerable people was not signed into law. Similar laws to collect rental housing data are already in place throughout the nation, so the veto means Seattle is still behind the times,” said Pedersen.
