City authorizes the removal of two Tacoma homeless encampments
TACOMA, Wash. Two Pierce County homeless encampments will be removed in the coming weeks.
The City of Tacoma authorized the removal of the encampment on Milwaukee Way and another at the Murray Morgan Bridge after both sites have seen a "significant increase in emergency service requests."
The Milwaukee Way removal is scheduled to begin on June 21, while the Murray Morgan Bridge removal is slated for July 12.
"Although our encampment removal policy allows a 72-hour posting, we will implement a four-week posting period to allow for increased connection to shelter," the city said in a press release. "Garbage and debris removal will happen after the encampments are unoccupied, and staff will continue to provide resources and notice to individuals at the sites prior to the encampment removal. We will coordinate with the Tacoma Police Department, and other homeless outreach agencies necessary to complete the encampment removals.
