Farmers feel sting of unseasonal weather, record inflation

SNOHOMISH — Dan Bartelheimer estimates he may leave 400 of his farm’s 1,400 acres unplanted this year because of spring rains.

“I don’t recall a year that has been this wet and this cold for so long,” said Bartelheimer, 79.

His operation, Sno-Valley Farms, grows organic barley, hay and corn. Bartelheimer said some fields are too soggy for planting, or were planted and then drenched by record-breaking rain on June 9.

“It’s all underwater again,” he said.

fluctuating within fairly-well-known parameters, established by past baselines.

Way too many people totally underestimate the danger to the social order implied by climate change. They see what sound like small numbers ... 1C, 2C, etc, and think 'okay so it'll be a little warmer on average, big deal!'.

Well this seemingly small change IS a big deal. In many regions of the world, it's a big fucking deal.

If it was happening 200 years ago, it wouldn't be. But now? Humanity is set up such that it COUNTS upon fairly reliable weather, that matches roughly what it was over the past 200 years, when we built our infrastructure.

And then there's the fact that economic growth = fossil fuel usage.

And the entire world economy depends on perpetual growth.
