Seattle chamber loses appeal over JumpStart payroll tax
The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce has lost its appeal challenging the JumpStart Seattle payroll tax.
In a decision filed Tuesday in the Washington state Court of Appeals, the court disagreed with the chamber's argument that JumpStart is an illegal tax on the right to work for wages.
The chamber's initial challenge to the payroll tax was tossed out by King County Superior Court Judge Mary Roberts in June last year, but the chamber filed an appeal in July, and oral arguments began in April. Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda spearheaded JumpStart Seattle, which passed in July 2020.
Thanks to the citys legal team and the broad coalition of businesses, labor unions, community-based organizations, affordable housing advocates, environmental groups, immigrant rights activists, and more all who built JumpStart Seattle our progressive payroll tax continues to be the law of the land," Mosqueda said in a news release. "Well continue investments in affordable housing, equitable development, the citys Green New Deal, economic resilience, and workforce development to help build a stronger, healthier, and more economically diverse Seattle."
