Oct. 12An ordinance to create a homeless encampment ban around temporary shelters and protected waters in Tacoma was passed by the City Council on a 6-3 vote Tuesday night.
The ordinance restricts homeless camps from being set up within 10 blocks of the city's temporary homeless shelters.
The implementation and enforcement of the ordinance will be determined by Neighborhood and Community Services and Tacoma Police Department, ahead of the Nov. 14 effective date.
Encampments now would be banned near Aspen Court, Tacoma Emergency Micro-Shelter Sites at 6th Avenue and Orchard Street, South 69th Street and Proctor Street, 60th Street and McKinley Avenue; the stability site at 1421 Puyallup Ave.; the mitigation sites at South 82nd Street and Pacific Avenue and 3561 Pacific Avenue, the RISE Center Emergency Stabilization Shelter, Altheimer Memorial Church of God in Christ, Bethlehem Baptist Church and Shiloh Baptist Church.

(66,444 posts)Now Tacomas homeless are going to spend every night getting move along-ed and wont get a wink of sleep. Just one more way we make innocent people suffer.
If the smug bastards who passed this ordinance would just stop thinking of homeless people as being homeless and start thinking of them as people, it would start to get better.

City-sanctioned encampment offers one-of-a-kind approach in Tacoma
A city-sanctioned tent encampment is nearly ready to open, making it one of the more unusual shelter options available in the state to assist homeless people.
The emergency mitigation site is being developed in partnership with Tacoma Rescue Mission and will be on a parcel of land along Pacific Ave. and S 35th St.
Unlike tiny house villages or hotels that have been converted to shelter space, this effort will rely on individual tents set up on elevated platforms to house approximately 50 people. The model appears to be unique and a check of other regional municipalities shows no other cities are operating sanctioned tent camps. A spokesperson for the King County Regional Homelessness Authority said both Tent City 3 and Nickelsville are self-organized.
However, many neighbors around the site have deep doubts about this approach and said since the unauthorized camp took hold, so much has changed.
