Train derails in Anacortes, spilling diesel

Last edited Thu Mar 16, 2023, 10:26 PM - Edit history (1)

Crews are at the scene of a train derailment that caused diesel to spill in Anacortes.

The derailment happened shortly after midnight on the Swinomish Reservation near the Swinomish Casino and Lodge on Fidalgo Island.

A BNSF train was traveling east when two locomotives left the tracks before reaching the bridge that crosses the Swinomish Channel, according to Swinomish Chief of Police Earl Cowan.

Two BNSF workers were involved, Cowan said.

I know little about train wrecks. So, how could two engines derail... TreasonousBastard Mar 2023 #1

Somewhat familiar with that area. The train didn't travel to far from the March Point refinery (its on the peninsula in the map shown) to where it derailed just before the bridge.

I'm wondering if the train had to slow down suddenly because the bridge wasn't ready for it. That bridge is usually open due to boat traffic.

I'm sure we'll hear more about it.
