Seattle Mayor-elect Katie Wilson sets sights on housing, child care ahead of taking office

Seattle Mayor-elect Katie Wilson said she "absolutely" won a mandate with her election victory over incumbent Bruce Harrell, after eking out a 0.7-percentage-point margin last month.

All eyes are on the 43-year-old community organizer who promotes progressive revenue mechanisms for housing, climate projects and other services.

"We're going to be pulling together stakeholders very early in my term to start figuring out how we can tackle our child care crisis, and it's one thing where we might be looking for new funding," said Wilson.

That search for new revenue, though, comes after city voters renewed the multiyear education levy for a total of $1.3 billion, approved a permanent new tax to fund social housing, and passed a temporary overhaul of the business and occupation tax that's expected to raise $81 million to sustain affordable housing, shelter and other services in the face of dwindling tax revenues and federal budget cuts.
