Meta lays off nearly 1,400 employees in WA amid companywide cuts

Meta Platforms Inc. (Nasdaq: META) laid off 1,395 employees in Washington this week as part of cuts to 10% of its companywide workforce as it focuses on its artificial intelligence business.

Meta, which employed about 8,000 people in the Puget Sound region as of 2024, laid off workers in Seattle, Bellevue and Redmond, the social media company wrote in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the state Friday.

“The changes we are implementing vary by team and include layoffs, open role closures, and moving thousands of employees to business-critical priorities across the company,” a Meta spokesperson said in an email to the Business Journal.

Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, Meta’s recent cuts in Washington now total nearly 2,000 after it laid off 600 employees in Washington in a spate of downsizings since October.
