And I think I'm in love with Seattle.
What a great city.
Comicon added some nice flavor to the convention area.
And it's restaurant week, too.

People are people but I like the way Seattle people do their thing.

(23,156 posts)We made a family vacation there mumble mumble years ago, and just loved it.
I have a son who lives in Portland, OR, and while the two cities are quite different and distinct, they are both part of the Pacific Northwest which is itself absolutely fabulous.

(6,133 posts)My wife and I have talked about moving there. It would finally be nice to be living in a place where most people agreed with you politically.

(6,335 posts)Seattle Vancouver BC and Portland are expected to have a bit of an earthquake anytime. Its the major factor I am soon moving out. Sold the house and bought a small motorhome to travel a yr or 2 and decide where. Cant wait to hit the road.

(41,103 posts)But earthquakes are a danger, sorry to say. Summers have been abnormally HOT for several years, 100 degrees when their normal is high 70s, low 80s I know. Probably climate change impact. Still, it's a magnificent, unique city that is cosmopolitan and green like no other and should be seen.

(6,335 posts)about the 9.0 EQ to hit the PNW a few weeks ago. It happens every 250 -300 yrs and the last was 1700 AD. THey said it will be the worst natural disater in US history. Maybe world history since its hitting such a huge unprepared population centers.
I've been worried about it for the past 25 yrs soon after they discovered about it. I finally am taking action. SOmebody made me an offer on my house I couldnt refuse. That helped hugely.
Great idea to travel about and see the country. Consider visiting Minnesota! We are a blue state with lots of civic engagement. We are far from rising sea levels and (we hope) not in danger of serious earthquakes. We have lots of freshwater lakes and rivers, and an international port at Duluth on Lake Superior. We border Canada! The culture in the Twin Cities is topnotch (music, theatre, international film, dance companies, education, museums, restaurants, festivals, etc.) I don't think anywhere else in the country can match the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, BUT Minnesota has the Mississippi River, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Lake Superior with its spectacular north shore, and the more than 10,000 lakes, as well as the 230 miles of bikeways and green parks within the Twin Cities (#1 city for bicycling). With global warming upon us, winters are getting shorter. But, in truth, that is something to be feared. Winter is also gorgeous and transforms everything for the few months it is here. I moved here from Tennessee and I find winter the most beautiful season.

(6,335 posts)I;ve always wanted to see all those lakes and Boundary Waters Great Lakes shoreline. Thanks for tip on N. Shore. Then I'll go up to Toronto, Montreal Vermont down the east coast to FLorida over to Texas then down to Central America and maybe beyond. Patagonia or bust! Ha.

BUT
Nothing is more beautiful that western Washington especially in sunny and 74 degrees.
I head straight to the park by the water.
I like Van BC downtown much better and their Stanley Pk is world class. THeir beaches ring the cty but I like Seattle's beaches better for some reason. The Olympics in the setting sun with the ferries is fantastic.

(6,335 posts)Just to do it. It will take me 5 months I figure.
I would have a good water supply on hand and extra canned food just in case. I even bought an old beater $800 trailer with survival supplies to live in if my house didnt make it. Now I gotta sell it.

(2,682 posts)in our fair city. However, before you declare your undying love, come visit us in the winter when it's dark 16 hours a day. When it rains, which is often, it's even darker. It's an acquired taste. The trade-off is our lush green trees.
My favorite festival is in May -- Seattle International Film Festival. About 400 movies shown over 21 days in six theaters. It's the largest film festival in the country.

(2,543 posts)We do suffer through nasty wet dark cold winters and the "June gloom" but the period after July 4 to Labor Day is usually glorious - a LOT like the weather we've been having the last 2 weeks.
We have SIFF and good restaurants and good coffee and a lot of progressive people. It's a great place to live.

(1,348 posts)I spent the summer there 15 years ago, and it rocked. It's on the short list of cities in which I'd like to live someday (stuck in Iowa right now).
Ever go to Vancouver BC then. Seattle pales in comparison, sadly. Much like but way more true about how Portland pales in comparison to Seattle.

(6,640 posts)From sept through July it is rainy gloomy and dark. then in July we get a short summer. But sometimes an April break of nice weather happens. The year we moved here in the 70s it was April and 75 degrees for a week or so. People were going to the lakes and sitting on the shores. We couldn't understand it. We thought they could wait until summer when it was really warm, Boy, were we idiots!! Sometimes that is the only warm break all year. You grab it when you can. And you better not like dining al fresco very often or you will be eating food diluted with rain.
