(51,907 posts)Dear Party Leader,
The Washington State Democrats are kicking our communications efforts into high gear.
In order to ensure a successful 2012, we need to be prepared to dominate the news cycle. That means whenever an important story hits, we need to be ready to respond -- by submitting letters to the editor, posting comments on news sites, escalating stories to Facebook and Twitter, or finding appropriate spokespeople to respond.
We can't do it without your help. Please help us make sure the Democratic message hits the news by joining the 2012 Rapid Response Team, a group of engaged and active Democrats who can help us in this very important effort.
When joining this team, you will receive regular updates from our Communications Director, Reesa Kossoff, who will alert the team to breaking news stories and ways to respond.
To help us in this important effort, please email Reesa at reesa {at} wa-democrats.org or call her at 206.457.3518.
Thank you for your dedication and support.

(51,907 posts)Zillah Latino makes bid in redrawn 15th District
ZILLAH Pablo Gonzalez, 20, rose to speak before a small crowd in Zillah on Thursday as a hometown boy from the farm turned political science student at Central Washington University.
By the time his father hugged him afterward, he was officially a Democratic candidate for the state Houses 15th Legislative District. It was his first public speech as a politician.
I would like to be open to new ideas, young ideas, said Gonzalez, who is also mounting a campaign to run for student body president at CWU.
Gonzalez is the first Latino to declare a legislative bid for 15th District, which was redrawn earlier this year by the states Redistricting Commission to create a 55 percent majority Latino population. He is running against incumbent Rep. David Taylor, R-Moxee.
Gonzalez said jobs, higher education, agriculture and securing more state funding for local projects would be among his priorities if elected. He said being a Democrat would help him bring more funding to the area.
We need to have someone in the majority party who will bring home the bacon, Gonzalez said. Bring home the bacon.
Gonzalez, the son of immigrants from the Mexican state of Michoacan, said his campaign will rely heavily on grassroots efforts around the Valley to tout his platform.
Ive got brand new legs, he said. Well be walking door to door.
The minimum age requirement to run for the state House of Representatives is 18, according to the Secretary of States Office. The individual must also be a registered voter.

(51,907 posts)Pablo Gonzalez, a 21-year-old college student, wants to be a fresh Democratic voice in the newly drawn 15th Legislative District, but his first bid for office will be against Rep. David Taylor, a Republican incumbent who touts years of experience in the private and public sectors.
The two men come from opposing parties and different cultural backgrounds, but have similar sentiments on jobs and the economy. Both want to ease the burden of state regulations on small businesses; both oppose tax increases; and both want the state to find more funding for education.
Gonzalez, of Zillah, says what would make him different is the amount of attention he would pay to the district, which he says is lacking under Taylor. As a Democrat, Gonzalez says his affiliation with the majority party would allow him to "bring home the bacon" for projects in the district.
"He (Taylor) hasnt done anything for this district," Gonzalez said. "Being in the majority party would make it easy for small businesses to get tax cuts."

Join us for a party to retain Justice Steve Gonzalez
MDC Members and Friends,
Join us this coming Tuesday, July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. as we come together to help return Justice Steven C. Gonzalez to the WA Supreme Court. This is a critical race that will be decided in the primary on August 7.
Here is a link to the recent article in the Stranger explaining why this race is so important.
Last November, when Steven Gonzalez was appointed as the first Mexican-American supreme court justice in Washington State history, Governor Chris Gregoire hailed him as an "exceptionally qualified" pick to replace retiring justice Gerry Alexander. The legal community largely agreed, seeing Gonzalez's experience as a King County Superior Court judge, a terrorism prosecutor, and a private attorney as setting him up to be a strong addition to the high court.
Which is why so many lawyers and supreme court watchers are now so concerned by the possibility that Gonzalez could lose the August 7 primarywhich, because of the unique rules of judicial races, will determine the outcome of this raceover something as inconsequential as his last name.
At the home of Jean and Roger Leed, 1826 E Hamlin St, near the Seattle Yacht Club just south of the Montlake Cut.

(51,907 posts)Dear Friends,
I write to encourage you to cast your ballot for judicial candidates when you vote in the primary by August 7 and in the general election in November. This year we have a number of contested judicial elections and its particularly important that conscientious voters across the state exercise their right to select the judges who will interpret our laws and constitution.
Visit http://www.votingforjudges.org to peruse the wealth of information about judicial candidates so well presented to assist you in voting.
I love serving as a Supreme Court Justice and I find it a challenging and demanding position. This gives me an intense interest in electing the best possible judges to our Supreme Court. Here are my thoughts about the three contested Supreme Court elections.
Position 2: Incumbent Justice Susan Owens faces two challengers, neither of whom has any judicial experience and neither of whom has actively campaigned. Justice Owens has served as a judge in our state for 31 years as a municipal judge, district court judge, tribal judge, and for the past 12 years as a Supreme Court justice. She brings to the Court a practical orientation, solid experience, and diligence in her work. She is the clear choice for reelection.
Position 8: Incumbent Justice Steve Gonzalez is our newest justice, having been appointed to serve the remaining year of retired Justice Alexanders term. He is an outstanding judge, bringing to the Court 10 years of experience as a superior court judge, experience as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (during which he prosecuted the terrorist millennium bomber who was apprehended in Pt. Angeles while disembarking the ferry from Victoria), a municipal deputy attorney, and a lawyer in private practice. He also brings a keen sense of justice for all our citizens, especially members of our minority communities. The lawyer who has filed against Justice Gonzalez has no apparent qualifications for serving on the Supreme Court.. It is critical that we elect Justice Gonzalez and I strongly urge you to vote for him. With only two candidates, the winner of the primary will win this election. Please vote for Justice Gonzalez and urge others to vote for him as well.
Position 9: This is an open seat because Justice Tom Chambers is retiring after serving on the Court with distinction for two terms. Four candidates have filed for this position, including Richard Sanders, whom I defeated two years ago. For all the reasons I articulated in my election, I do not recommend voting for Sanders. The other three candidates are all qualified to sit on the Supreme Court and they have very different backgrounds. They are, in alphabetical order:
Judge Bruce Hilyer is the only one of the three who has judicial experience, having served on the King County Superior Court since 2000. Judge Hilyer is endorsed by an impressive group of retired supreme court justices and sitting judges across the state, organizations and individuals, and the Seattle Times. He is very highly rated by bar association and good government groups.
John Ladenburg is a very experienced attorney, having served as the elected prosecuting attorney for Pierce County and the Pierce County Executive. He has extensive private practice experience and substantial major trial experience. He is highly rated by bar association and good government groups and is endorsed by the Tacoma News Tribune.
In my opinion, these are three fine candidates and any one of them would be a good addition to the Supreme Court. I hope you will visit www.votingforjudges.org to evaluate them more closely and vote for the candidate whom you believe will best serve our citizens as a Supreme Court Justice, as well as voting in any contested superior and appellate court elections.
Best regards,
Charlie Wiggins
