Snow is gone from Stevens Pass -- 5th earliest meltout in 39 years
STEVENS PASS, Wash. -- The snow is, by statistical purposes, officially gone from Stevens Pass.
It's considered an official "meltout" when the snowpack is measured at under 2 inches at their measuring site, which occurred on Monday, according to research meteorologist Mark Albright. Albright keeps track of the meltout each year and says May 13 ranks as the 5th earliest date since records have been kept in 1981. Still a far cry from our record breaking 2015 winter and spring which saw a months-long warm pattern and what little snow was up there melted away on April 28. On the other hand, we're only 8 years removed from the latest meltout on July 1, 2011. The median date for meltout at Stevens is June 2, according to Albright. Last year was nearly spot on normal at June 1. Snoqualmie Pass melted out on May 5 for a total snowfall of 304 inches this winter, which is the lowest amount since the record-bare 104" of 2014-15. https://www.seattlepi.com/local/komo/article/Snow-is-gone-from-Stevens-Pass-5th-earliest-13845639.php?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=dailynewsletterspi&utm_term=spi
