Vancouver Dollar Tree fined $503K for unsafe conditions

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries has fined a Dollar Tree store in Vancouver just over $500,000, alleging unsafe conditions.

The Columbian reports the fine announced Thursday is one of the largest the agency has ever issued.

The agency accuses the store of having blocked emergency exit routes, unsafe ladder use and improper stacking of merchandise, among the numerous safety hazards.

The agency says a recent inspection resulted in several "repeat willful" and other violations for unsafe merchandise storage and handling, and obstructed exit routes.

Most common: Standing on chairs to change light bulbs or adjust ventilation.

Fire extinguishers not properly mounted or with signage blocked by advertisements or other objects.

Electric panel boards blocked by merchandise or advertisements. This is a danger to the fire department. If there is a fire, they would want to cut off electricity while pouring water.

Each of these warrants a fine of thousands of dollars if seen by an O.S.H.A. inspector.

if the dollar store in my community has the same violations. Things are stacked haphazardly. Aisles are blocked. It is not a clean store.

I was there yesterday. Usually, I avoid the place.
