Young Democrats back challengers to Sawant, Kohl-Welles and Gossett

The King County Young Democrats have opted for a slate of insurgents, endorsing young challengers to Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant and King County Council incumbents Larry Gossett and Jeanne Kohl-Welles.

The YDs used Sunday night, when the finale of "Game of Thrones" was airing on TV, to make their picks on filling local seats of power, and unseating incumbents.

They endorsed not one but two challengers -- Seattle School Board member Zachary DeWolf and legal aid lawyer Ami Nguyen -- to Seattle City Council incumbent Kshama Sawant, a member of the militant Socialist Alternative movement.

Democratic groups are loathe (and sometimes forbidden) to endorse non-Democrats. But Sawant supporters have adopted a strategy of fighting for non-endorsements. Sawant appeared at a Young Democrats' candidates forum on April 28. She represents District 3.
