Seattle Children's Hospital closes several operating rooms after fungus detected

Seattle Children's Hospital has closed some of its operating rooms after a fungus was detected inside.

The fungus, known as Aspergillus, is potentially harmful to patients. It was found in several operating rooms and equipment storage rooms during air tests last weekend.

Most people breathe Aspergillus spores every day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but the spores can be harmful to people with weakened immune systems or lung disease. It can also cause complications for surgical patients, hospital officials told the Associated Press.

An investigation by an outside industrial hygienist was ongoing Wednesday to determine the source of the mold.
