"Empty Bowls" fundraiser this Sunday to help the hungry

March 10, 2014
Volunteers lend talents to upcoming Empty Bowls Luncheon
By Chelsi Baker

FAIRMONT — “We have plenty of bowls,” said Jeff Greenham, ceramics professor and the coordinator of Fairmont State University’s art department.

Fairmont State students, faculty and staff have been working to make bowls that will be donated to the United Way’s Empty Bowls Luncheon on Sunday. Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort started by potters to help support organizations that feed the hungry. Guests choose a bowl when they arrive at the soup luncheon and can take the bowl with them when the event is over. The bowls symbolize those in the community who don’t have enough to eat.

Tickets for the luncheon are $15 for adults and $5 for children and are still available. For more information, call the United Way at 304-366-4550.

It was years ago. It was inspiring Handpuppet.

I still have that bowl. A green hat with a pink rose on it.

Wonderful fundraiser! Let's fill those empty bowls.

I'm only sorry I spotted this notice so late but I'm sure there would still be tickets available.

The idea behind the Empty Bowls Project, an international grassroots effort, is to raise awareness of the issue of hunger. The handcrafted bowls are a reminder of all the people who don’t have enough food to eat.

“The need is definitely here in Marion County,” Farley said.

A total of 70 or 80 volunteers helped out between the two different schools, and each location saw about 250 community members in attendance. Many people also gave monetary donations.

“Since this is our first year, we’ve just been overwhelmed at the turnout,” said Shelia Tennant, director of the Soup Opera. “It has just been so wonderful.”
