Coming east through Southern Ohio, we saw on the map a bridge crossing Blennerhassett. We assumed we could get off there and make a brief visit to the Island, which has fascinated me since reading of Aaron Burr's connection to the Blennerhassett family in the early days of our republic.

Alas, the bridge crosses above the Island from Ohio into West Virginia, and no ready bridge in sight. Apparently, it's necessary to take a boat, and we didn't have time allotted for that.

So, celebrate West Virginia's 150th (?) birthday, and work to elect some good Democrats this fall.

But we celebrate even in the non-significant years.

I've been to the island several times, though not for many years -- not since the bridge was built. I had an old friend who did some of the archeology there, that lead to the rebuilding of the Blennerhassett mansion. It's beautiful, and it's amazing to think that the original was built in what was the howling wilderness in 1800.

Next time I/we pass that way we'll try to allot the necessary time to visit Blennerhassett Island. -
It's on my bucket list.
