West Virginia Women Work program recognized
By Jessica Borders

FAIRMONT — West Virginia Women Work is excited to see its construction training program recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor and is looking forward to future growth.

Through its Step Up for Women program, the nonprofit West Virginia Women Work prepares women for entry into the construction registered apprenticeship programs in the state. The organization has called itself a pre-apprenticeship program for some time, but is thrilled to now get official recognition that the Department of Labor defines Step Up for Women as quality pre-apprenticeship training, said Janis Gunel, executive director of West Virginia Women Work.

In West Virginia, this is the first program to be acknowledged for meeting the established definition and quality framework. Ken Milnes, the West Virginia State Director with the Department of Labor, made the announcement last month.
